Avoiding the costly architectural traps that force 6-month rewrites at Series A.
In early startup stages, there is immense pressure to ship features quickly. However, certain architectural decisions are extraordinarily difficult and expensive to change once you have paying enterprise customers.
The most common culprit is multi-tenant data architecture. If you build a SaaS application without strict tenant isolation at the database layer, adding workspace permissions, role-based access control (RBAC), and compliance audits six months later requires rewriting nearly every query in your codebase.
Rather than relying on developers to remember `WHERE organization_id = ?` on every single SQL query, modern SaaS applications should enforce tenant isolation directly at the database layer using PostgreSQL Row-Level Security (RLS).
By setting the tenant context in your database connection session, PostgreSQL automatically filters out all records not belonging to the active organization. Even if a junior developer writes a raw query without a filter, data leakage across customers is mathematically impossible.
Whenever your application interacts with third-party APIs—whether generating LLM completions, sending transactional emails via Resend, or calculating billing metrics—these tasks must never block the client HTTP request.
We use Redis-backed queues (such as BullMQ) with idempotent worker handlers. The API responds to the user in under 50 milliseconds with a job ID, and updates the frontend via Server-Sent Events (SSE) or WebSockets when the background job resolves. This keeps the UI feeling instant and prevents timeout cascades during traffic surges.
